8 Essential Camping Gears for First-time Campers

If you are thinking about going camping for the first time, then you would certainly want to make sure that you have plenty of gears ready. This is easier said than done, especially when you have never been camping before. That's why we've compiled this guide for you, so you can learn everything you need to know and in half the time!

1. Lighting

Being in the dark isn't fun. Although campfires are lovely, don't rely on it as your source of lighting. There is a wide range of lighting options out there (LED, gas, dual fuel, battery operated and solar-powered). Choose the brightest and the best you can afford; you won't regret it. If you only bring a flashlight, you’ll have a difficult time performing any tasks after dark. A headlamp would be of great use! You’ll definitely want one to illuminate whatever is directly in front of you, helping you see when hiking, gathering firewood, or pitching your tent.

2. Bedding/Sleeping Bag

Comfort is everything when you are out camping. Some of the factors to consider in choosing your bedding or sleeping bag are temperature rating, material, fit and shape. A sleeping bag's temperature rating identifies the lowest temperature at which a bag is intended to keep the average sleeper warm. Get the best bedding or sleeping bag you can find. Mummy-shaped bags are more efficient at keeping the body warm. You don't want to freeze out there in the cold, right?

3. First-Aid Kit

Make sure that you have a well stocked-up first aid kit that comes with insect repellent. Some of the stuffs inside you will use fairly regularly and should be replaced often (moleskin for blisters, bandages, or medicines), while others are rarely used but are critical in an emergency. Though no one ever wants to get hurt, it's better to be prepared for the worst than to find yourself without the right tools in an emergency situation.

4. Shovel

You will need a shovel if you want to dig up holes and fix up a good fire. You'll also need one to bang in a couple of tent pegs. It also comes in handy if you want to dig a temporary toilet facility. Most shovels used for camping and scouting fold and can clip to your belt or pack. Go for a good, tough multi-functional shovel with a sturdy handle. High quality steel, such as stainless- and carbon-steel are the most commonly used materials in manufacturing folding shovels. Most of the time it’s a useful work-saving tool, other times it can be a life-saver.

5. Apparel

Pack plenty of clothes and a spare set on top of that. Having a designated pair of camp pants is worthwhile, especially if you are cooking, cutting wood or tending the fire. Wind- and weather-resistant articles like jackets and outer layers should always get stuffed somewhere during the packing job. You might also want to get some glow in the dark stickers for your family members so you can always see them in the dark.

6. CookingCamping Gears

It doesn't matter what you want to cook, because you always need to make sure that you can cook your food thoroughly and properly. If your cooker keeps cutting out, get rid of it and get a new one. You can't go wrong with a good camping stove. Propane stoves are easiest to use, while white gas stoves produce more heat.

7. Portable Cooler

You would be surprised at how much you could benefit from a portable cooler. It will keep your food last longer, as well as keeping it fresher. You don't want to be unlucky enough to have eaten spoiled food, do you?

8. Folding Table

Similar to good camping tents, the offer in camping chairs and tables is huge for campers. A folding table is ideal if you have a family. Everyone can eat together and it is great for dishing up food. The ideal camping table is weather resistant, stable and easy to store and carry.
